In cabinetmaking, a rabbet and a groove are both types of cuts or recesses made in wood, but they serve different purposes:
- A rabbet is an L-shaped cut made along the edge of a board. It creates a step that allows another piece of wood (like a cabinet back or side panel) to fit snugly into it. Think of it as a notch cut out of the edge.
- A groove is a straight channel cut into the surface of a board, but not all the way through. It’s typically made away from the edge and is used to hold things like the back panel of a cabinet or a drawer bottom.
